Mercedes-Benz CL63 And CL65 AMG Preview

November 20th, 2009

Three weeks ago Mercedes-Benz 2011 release of the new CL-Class to the world, and today we are blessed with AMG’s tough brother, the CL63 AMG and CL65. These two cars offer better handling, more aggressive look, a more basic equipment specs, and, of course, a colossal amount of power.

Smaller, but more
First up, the little brother of the duo: the CL63 AMG. Although the least powerful of the two cars, it’s actually the (arguably) more advanced engine: Mercedes AMG’s new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 with 536 horsepower and 590 pounds-feet of torque standard, and to 563 hp and 664 pounds-feet of torque with the AMG performance upgrade. This is actually a down-size in displacement of the previous 6.2-liter (but called it a Mercedes 6.3-liter) V-8 in naturally aspirated, but it is a step in power. In combination with the standard three-mode AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed transmission sports car is good for 4.4 seconds 0-60 mph and 155 mph top speed run in standard trim. Mercedes has not released performance figures for the new AMG package.

At the end of the current path will get an AMG sports exhaust system with twin dual chrome exhaust pipes. The AMG-tuned suspension all round, with sporty front anti-lift control, and the back gets both anti-dive and anti-squat systems. AMG tunes also the Active Body Control system for better performance under sporting conditions.

Twenty-inch wheels wrapped in 255/35 front and 275/35 high-performance tires put the power to the ground. Brakes are huge two-part internally ventilated and perforated 15.4-inch units at the front with double sliding calipers while the rears are only 1 inch smaller and get a sliding calipers – lots of stopping power for a big, fast car.

As standard equipment, the CL63 AMG comes with the infotainment system COMAND, sporting a 40-gigabyte hard drive and GPS navigation, Bluetooth hands-free calling, voice control for audio, telephone and NAV, plus a range of high-spec electronics, including November 1 – speaker Harman / Kardon Logic7 surround sound system with SD card reader and six-disc DVD / CD changer. AMG premium leather steering wheel and aluminum shift paddles Performance, RACETIMER equipped instrument cluster, and 14-way power heated front seats with active and ventilated lumbar support are standard. For the full (and very detailed) spec list, look on page two.

Two options packs are available for the CL63 AMG: AMG Driver Assistance and Performance. Driver Assistance Package provides DISTRONIC PLUS with PRE-SAFE brakes, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist. For more information about what these technologies do, check out our review. The AMG performance package removes the top speed limiter, allowing it to match its bigger brother at 186 mph, increases power by 27 horsepower and 74 pounds-feet, and adds a carbon fiber engine cover.

The CL65 AMG
The CL65 more than makes up for the slightly older tech engine roaring with a 6.0-liter V-12 bound with a pair of turbos that pump output to 621 hp at 4,800 rpm and 738 pounds-feet of torque available from 2.000 to 4.000 rpm. The extra power only shaves 0.2 seconds from 0-60 mph time of the CL63 AMG, resulting in a 4.2-second dash. The likely culprit? The rear tires can only do so much. The extra power will certainly have a more apparent time roles, particularly in passing at moderate speeds or acceleration at the top, although the AMG performance package next CL63 AMG will close the gap considerably. The top speed of the V-12 beastie is 186 mph.

The beefier engine, the CL65 AMG is to step back to just five speeds in the AMG SPEED SHIFT transmission, but it gets the three-mode setup with Sport, Comfort and Manual options.

Brakes are the same as the CL63 AMG, like the wheels, tires, suspension and steering. Exterior differences include badges and a set of “V-12-design” dual chrome exhaust pipes.

Unlike the CL63 AMG, CL65 AMG does not offer any packages (to get the upgrades standard), but it offers a number of stand-alone options, including a split view dual-screen content, carbon to rim, and a series of paint trim and options. For full specifications and details about the CL65 AMG, check out the list on page three.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG and CL65 will hit dealerships in November this year.
