Kia Sportage: First Drive Coverage

October 15th, 2009

It was a busy week here in San Francisco. Today, High Gear Media on the street with the Volkswagen Jetta 2011 – but earlier this week, we sampled the new SUV from South Korea, the 2011 Kia Sportage.

The Sportage is closely related to the Hyundai Tucson, but parked side by side, it’s hard to tell. Tucson is the tops and corners are replaced on the Sportage with a balanced collection of straight edges and a buff stance. Inside the Sportage carries a series of rectangles that leads to a call on our testers over Tucson’s more flashy limits.

And although almost mechanical twins – from their 170-hp four-cylinder engines available to their all-wheel drive – the Sportage feels a bit better sorted than Tucson. There is a little less noise and vibration, a slight improvement in sight. Above all, the Kia UVO infotainment controller provides the first brand to take on the nature of the Bluetooth fuel that the safety of Ford SYNC promises – and it is not available at the Tucson.
