2011 Ford Explorer Won’t Get Award-Winning Sport Trac Version

February 5th, 2010

Much ado made about shifting the 2011 Ford Explorer to a car-based platform and a ditching of V-8 engines, but the media storm has largely slipped by one small detail: the death of the Explorer Sport Trac. What is the Sport Trac, you ask? Good question.

The little-known and slow-selling Ford Explorer Sport Trac was half pickup, half-SUV version of the Explorer, made possible by the body-on-frame construction. It offered four-door SUV-like cabin accommodations combined with a short bed pickup for light-like functionality. Although it did not sell much – Ford Explorer sales are not divided into sub-types, so we do not know exact figures – it was, at least according to JD Power, a very good car.

The recently released 2010 JD Power APEAL study, which the owner measures “satisfaction” with their new car purchase during the first 90 days, put the Explorer Sport Trac at the top of his class, beating out models like the Honda Ridgeline and Nissan Frontier.

But Ford does not seem too up for the loss of the Sport Trac, prices or not broken. Instead, think the Ford F150 pickup, double cab with its many variations, the needs of buyers fit Sport Trac, and the shift to the new platform and engine combo will breathe new life into the Explorer SUV / Crossover .
